Paris, hand-colored lithograph depicting a harbor scene with abbey, fountain, ships on three planes and a watchtower on a hill, with two-train clock movement and enameled Roman dial both marked "Gent & Co., Baker Street Bazar", large key-wind four-air cylinder movement No. 9932, operating instructions and going-barrel automaton movement, in giltwood and gesso frame, ht. 38 ½ in. x wd. 47 in. (98 x 119 cm) framed, image approx. 25 x 33 in. (63 x 84 cm). – The movement activates: nodding friar reading in a tower room, musician nodding his head as he strums a lute and taps his foot, twisting glass rod in the fountain, a mouse hiding in the well, a lady mending net by the harbor wall, a fish swimming by the harbor wall, a rocking ship in the foreground, two more tossing on rolling waves on the middle ground, a steamer and a sailing vessel crossing the horizon and the flag on the watchtower fluttering in the wind. – Although Tharin produced mechanical pictures in series, he incorporated variations in the movements and backgrounds. This particularly complex example features an extra set of ships and gently rolling waves in place of the usually-seen viaduct, requiring an expanded middle ground – and larger overall proportions – to accommodate the additional scenery. – For comparison, see Auction Team Breker, 25 May
