Probably production period end of 18th up to beginning of 19th century, Safavid-style, circular 33/8-inch (8,6 cm) diameter box with hinged lid and base; outer surfaces with engraved Arabic tables of 23 cities arranged in 2 rings - 46 locations in total - including Kabul, Kashmir and Baghdad, their longitudes (inhirafs) and latitudes (jihas); interior with trough for compass (missing), rotating indicator, annular dial delineated by cardinal points North, South and East, scale of degrees in 5˚ divisions and the names of 28 cities - 19 in the South-West, 5 in the South-East and 4 in the North-West; sides with engraved foliate border, inscription and stylized rose motifs, ht. closed 5/8 in. (1,6 cm), hinge refixed, inner lid and base soldered. - "While astrolabes, quadrants and sundials are to be found in Europe and the Islamic world, the qibla indicator is a purely Islamic instrument.
