Cloud Projector, c. 1890

Hugo B?hr, Dresden. Round wooden housing, 56 cm in diameter, with an internal glass disc (replaced) that is rotated by a brass crank. Instead of clouds, the projector depicts birds in flight. The projection opening is 14 cm in diameter. It includes a holder for 21 x 21 cm filters, with two effect cloud filters for blue and reddish evening clouds. Two strips on the back allow it to be inserted into a missing simple stand (see reproduction), and a matching carbon arc lamp is included. – The reproduction is taken from: C.F. Baumann, "Bühnentechnik im Festspielhaus Bayreuth" (Stage Technology in the Bayreuth Festival Theater). Munich 1980. Quote: "Many reports and records of productions at the Bayreuth Festival Theater indicate the use of numerous cloud projections. From 1876 to 1906, Hugo B?hr supplied the theater with many devices, often custom-made. B?hr primarily manufactured cloud projectors with all accessories for Bayreuth. In addition, he offered stage effects such as torches, fire pits, and swords. He sold large glass or mica discs, some painted, with various motifs. The 1906 catalog listed: Drifting clouds, some with dawn or moonlight; drifting storm clouds; rising clouds; fire; smoke; wandering ghosts; and witches." – This is the first time a theatrical projection device has been included in our auction. It's a topic that has been largely unexplored in its versatility for magic lantern collectors.
