3 English Magic Lanterns, 1820 onwards

England. 1) Magic lantern, height with chimney 76 cm, for 114 mm wide and up to 22 mm thick wooden-framed strips, with a high-quality double condenser of 92 mm diameter, brass projection lens 4/10 cm, consisting of two closely mounted single elements of over sized diameter, 30 mm from the front panel. The lens produces a fairly decent image. Presumably, the condenser and the lens were added c. 1850/1860. (3/3) – 2) Magic lantern, height with chimney 44 cm, for 84 mm wide wooden-framed strips with possibly smaller circular images, designed for the high-luminosity, two-element lens 3/80 mm (with cap) with strong image defects outside the center, which certainly enhanced the ghostly effect. Below the lens, a wire pull leads into the interior of the case for positioning the candle. (3-/3) – 3) McAllister, New York. Magic lantern, height with chimney 54 cm, for 105 mm wide wood-framed strips, without condenser, mounting of the two-element lens partially loose. (4/4) – And: 4) English strips, c. 1820, 9 wood-framed strips 71 x 267 mm, three strips of 3 images each depicting a topic, labeled lengthwise: 1. Views – Shipping – Derby Day, 2. Fauna and 3. The dog – a surrealist series of images of Mother Hubbard's dog, resurrected from the dead, reading a newspaper, feeding the cat, and receiving a monument. A few minor paint chips, otherwise good condition. (3/3)
